Thoughts from Consensus 2022

My biggest takeaway from Consensus is that crypto and web3 mean a lot of things to a lot of different people. Like a pool of water that casts your reflection back to you. Financiers see finance, artists see NFTs, activists see power shifts, degens see degen, and regens see regen.

In our world, most of us spend time indoors. And indoors, we are surrounded by walls covered in paint, floors covered in tile or rugs. Most of our environment is artificial. It is constructed to be convenient for us, it is not the natural world that was there before.

You’re not focused on the fact that the paint is actually hiding the studs behind the wall, and the actual wires and pipes and everything else. The fact that this is hidden from us doesn’t make it fake or un-real.

The metaverse will not come about in the same way the internet did. And it is no surprise the metaverse as a practical endeavor emerged out of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The metaverse represents the most recent battle between human freedom and the constraints of reality. It could also become a battle to define reality itself.
